OUR new Prime Minster Liz Truss has no time to waste in dealing with some of the worst economic problems to face the UK in decades. A necessary fuel price freeze is being touted, but she needs to source more of our own energy and ensure our tax burden is slashed to encourage growth.
With inflation surging to double digits, a cost-of-living crisis hurting most families, and six in 10 factories facing closure due to energy bills hitting record highs, there can be no honeymoon period for Ms Truss.
Families frightened by the prospect of a winter haunted by unaffordable heating bills will welcome a blanket freeze of price increases. Not normally one for state intervention, Ms Truss has little choice but to immediately respond to the emergency by deploying £100billion of state-backed loans to the energy industry.
As the crisis is the result of 20 years of government failures to secure our energy independence, it should be up to government to sort out the problem.
It is, of course, all taxpayers’ money in the end and we will eventually pay the price in higher energy levies, but at least that will be spread over decades rather than one cruel winter.
