RISHI Sunak plans to delay the ban on new petrol and diesel cars by five years.

Phasing out fossil fuel engines would not start until after 2035, but he remains committed to net zero by 2050.

Mr Sunak is also likely to water down plans to get rid of gas boilers.

In a major speech on Friday, he is tipped to scrap energy efficiency targets for private rented homes as

well as ruling out fresh taxes to discourage flying and policies to push people to change their diets.

He is also set to bin proposals for additional recycling schemes - and to postpone a ban on oil boilers, again to 2035.

There is no suggestion Mr Sunak will ditch a legal commitment to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 but he is expected to declare that other countries need to bear more of the burden of dealing with climate change.

Some of his backbench Tory MPs have long demanded a watering well as ruling out fresh taxes to discourage flying and policies to push people to change their diets.
