We all know we need to be healthier, fitter and exercise more. But lack of motivation seems to be hampering our ambitions – in fact, 30% of us use it as the main excuse for not working out. ‘When it comes to reaching your health and fitness goals, it can sometimes feel like a struggle to stay on track,’ says Krissy Cela, lead global trainer at Tone & Sculpt. ‘Once the initial rush of motivation dims, the actuality of staying consistent can feel lonely, draining and – at times – overwhelming.’
Exercising with others can make working up a sweat fun, improve focus and raise the issue of accountability. After all, who wants to let their friend down if they’ve planned to meet for a morning walk or partner up for a game of doubles? Plus, if there’s one thing we need more of in 2023, it’s social stimulation.
STRENGTH IN NUMBERS
‘Having a strong, supportive network of people around you who share the same experience can transform your fitness journey,’ says Krissy. ‘Studies show you’re more likely to finish the programme you started with a friend or partner.’ Social exercise enhances your team-building and social skills, as well as your overall physical and mental health. ‘Scientists found that having a strong connection and sharing an experience with people can lower your blood pressure and even help you sleep better,’ says Krissy. It’s no wonder the idea of belonging to a ‘fitness tribe’ has become so popular.
