With its latest collection, The Vernacular Modern honours Mysuru's wood inlay craft, striking a delicate balance between craft and design

"The Vernacular Modern is an homage to artisanal values and a slower, more intentional way of life,” says Deeptashree Saha, co-founder of the Bengaluru-based multidisciplinary design studio.

An interior designer and stylist from Kolkata, she founded the studio with Bengaluru-based architect and product designer Abhirup Dutta. Earlier known as Woodlabs, they pivoted their focus in 2024 to incorporate a wider exploration of materials and vernacular techniques. “We work closely with artisans who have safeguarded the wisdom of their craft, reviving practices and traditions for modern living,” shares Abhirup.
