The hangover from its re-markable Champions League come-from-behind victory against Paris Saint-Germain appeared to weigh heavily on Barcelona, as it went down to Alex Bergantinos’ winner 16 minutes from time, which handed Deportivo la Coruna a famous 2-1 win on March 12.

Joselu fired Deportivo to a first-half lead before Luis Suarez levelled for Barca in the first minute of the second period. However, Bergantinos rose the highest to score off a corner and seal Deportivo’s first victory over Barcelona since 2008.

Elsewhere, Real Madrid took advantage of Barcelona’s slip-up and moved to the top of the table after defeating Real Betis 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu. After conceding an embarrassing own goal by goalkeeper Keylor Navas, the European champion hit back through headers from Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos. The win took Los Blancos to 62 points, three more than Barcelona with a game in hand.

Atletico Madrid is only five points adrift of Sevilla in third, as Antoine Griezmann headed home the winner in a vital 1-0 victory for

Diego Simeone’s men at Granada. Meanwhile, Sevilla’s La Liga title hopes suffered a fresh blow on March 11 when it was held 1-1 at home by lowly Leganes.
