The new installation is intended to be “in dialogue” with the floor-to-ceiling mural by Rex Whistler, which is in a room formerly used as a restaurant at the London gallery. A report by its ethics committee in 2020 was “unequivocal” that the mural, which contains caricatures and images of slavery, was “offensive”.
The committee called for a bold approach to contextualising the mural, but decided it should not be altered or removed.
