PM struggling to salvage key COP26 aim on warming

BORIS JOHNSON was today battling to salvage the COP26 aim of keeping alive the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5C.

The Prime Minister headed to Glasgow for fraught last-minute negotiations amid growing warnings that the summit could fail to achieve its central aim.

“We need to pull out all the stops in the next few days to keep 1.5 alive,” Mr Johnson tweeted.

“It’s time for nations to put aside differences and come together for our planet and our people.”

The UK, which is hosting the summit, this morning published a draft political decision, which will be negotiated over the next few days. Its key points include urging countries to strengthen by the end of next year their national climate plans for emissions reductions by 2030, and proposing a new summit of world leaders in 2023 to consider ambitions to 2030.

Nations will also be called on to accelerate the phasing-out of coal and subsidies for fossil fuels.
