Hope of higher rates sees banks lead sustained gain

THE New Year rebound for the FTSE 100 index continued today as banking giants Lloyds and Barclays joined the party on the back of expectations for higher interest rates in 2022.

Airline and leisure stocks also clung to the gains achieved in the first trading session of the year, when fading Omicron worries helped the top flight rally by 1.6% to the highest level since the beginning of 2020.

The FTSE 100 index added 16.41 points to 7521.56 but the mood was generally more subdued as attention turned back to inflation and speculation about when interest rates might rise.

I love using my phone at the dinner table and only a fool would try to ban them

I WAS five glasses deep into the new Beaujolais in The Royal Oak pub on Columbia Road in Shoreditch when I lost the game. It was 2014 and I reached for my phone stacked on top of the others, jenga'd precariously in the middle of the table.
