Corrie and Emmerdale will begin to feature scenes reminding soap fans to wash their hands.

ITV bosses hope to help stem the coronavirus pandemic by using the shows’ influence to send important messages to the public.

They have asked scriptwriters to make a series of last-minute rewrites so special scenes can be inserted into episodes. An ITV spokesman said: “Because we script and shoot so far in advance we don’t generally reflect contemporary issues.
