Weather warning as big chill arrives and explosive ‘thundersnow’ strikes

PARTS of Britain woke up to freezing temperatures yesterday – with the explosive sounds of “thundersnow” heard at 5am in Scotland.

And last night health chiefs issued a cold weather alert as the snow made for picturesque scenes in Suffolk, Essex, Kent, West Yorkshire, and the Pennines.

Police in Scotland had to reassure hundreds of residents who awoke to the sound of explosions across large parts of Edinburgh and beyond.

Many thought the two “extraordinarily loud” thunderclaps were a bomb exploding or a building collapsing.
