I just wish they had eloped. Not to save me the fortune it costs for a party venue, caterers, band, photographer, florist, bridal gown and the myriad extras that make modern weddings a flirtation with bankruptcy.
Rather, I wish they had eloped so that my wife and I didn’t have to deal with the ordeal of pandemic travel from our home in Los Angeles to attend Sophie’s wedding in West Sussex, quarantining for 10 days in London and paying fortunes for government-ordered Covid testing, even though we are fully vaccinated British-born UK citizens.
Chancellor Rishi Sunak is the latest to warn the Government that the UK’s draconian border rules are damaging the economy, even as some controls are eased from today for fully vaccinated visitors from America and much of Europe.
It’s a troubling move as Britain struggles with high Covid infection rates, and seems predicated not on medical science but in the hope of boosting UK tourism and, with luck, persuading the US to end its 16-month ban on British visitors.
But there remain many countries on the red and amber lists whose citizens must still endure quarantine to enjoy Britain’s rain-soaked summer, and for thousands like my wife and I, the change is too little, too late.
