Graphic content
Get creative with the space above the bed. Think of it as a blank canvas and add hand-drawn graphics - like the ones shown here by architect and designer Mangesh Lungare - or a wallpaper. Choose a pattern that is daring without being dizzying and keep the rest of the room's elements simple and serene.
Golden touch
Consider your headboard as the crowning glory of your bed and use it to demarcate a cocooning sleep area. 'The custom headboard in gold velvet and pink carpet create a true sanctuary here,' says Hélène Pinaud, principal architect, Heju Studio. 'The parquet floor has been painted white to bring in as much light as possible and create a soothing atmosphere.'

Double scoop
A single solid colour will never look as effective as a double helping of shades. For a curated look, continue the colour tones across the room - here the bedlinen and curtains are washed in similar hues. 'In this home, there are no white walls or ceilings - all rooms have grey as the primary colour, broken up with complementary shades, says Farah Ahmed, principal architect, FADD Studio. 'The tones in this bedroom scheme are lilac, indigo and rose. When one thinks of these, one thinks of a floral theme but we wanted it to be unexpected and therefore used these floral shades in a geometric form.'
