Comfort Your Child

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a condition where the body is not able to produce the insulin hormone. Insulin is responsible for keeping the blood sugar level in check when we eat food and also in the fasting state. So, in diabetes mellitus, blood sugar levels rise due to lack of insulin. Young children affected with diabetes mellitus are unable to produce any insulin at all. So, they are completely dependent on insulin administered through injections or pumps. Some diabetic children may require multiple injections; one injection every time they eat, and one at bedtime. Failure to take insulin and poor blood sugar control leads to kidney, eye, and cardiac complications. It also leads to insufficient growth, poor weight gain, constant fatigue, and an inability to participate in school activities. School is where a child spends maximum time, and in every school, there will be a few children with type 1 diabetes. Not only should parents keep a check on their children, but it is also very important for teachers and staff to be aware of this condition as they are readily available with them.
