An official Unsung Hero has a special message for the kind and generous readers of Let’s Talk ... thank you. Derek James chats to Michael “the postcard man” Porter.
It is such a simple way of helping others – handing over your picture postcards – and it has now raised the grand total of exactly £113,447.36, which goes to support the wonderful work of the Norfolk Deaf Children’s Society.
In more recent times it has been the readers of Let’s Talk who have jumped at the chance of helping deaf children by donating their cards to Michael and Sylvia Porter of Worlingham, near Beccles.
“I just want to thank them for their support. They are really helpful. People are so good,” said the man who, with his wife Sylvia, starting collecting and selling cards more than 35 years ago.
Last year dear Sylvia died, but Michael has pledged to carry on fundraising and at the end of 2016 was named an Unsung Hero of the Year at the Stars of Lowestoft and Waveney Awards organised by our sister newspapers, the Eastern Daily Press and Lowestoft Journal.
“I was overwhelmed. It means so much to me and is a big tribute to Sylvia’s memory,” said Michael.
