Tragedy changed the life of sue’s family – now others have hope of ending the devastation caused by brain tumours.
ONE thing that can be guaranteed is that every New Year there will be a hoo-ha over various honours awarded – but despite this many do end up with the right people, such as Sue Farrington Smith.
Sue, 59, who lives in Padbury, lost her niece, Alison Phelan, to a brain tumour in 2001, just before her eighth birthday. Shocked to discover the lack of awareness and chronic under funding of research, she co-founded the charity ‘Ali’s Dream’ with her sister, Julie Phelan, and others of Ali’s family and friends to raise funds for childhood brain tumour research.
Now she has been awarded an MBE and says: “I cried when I heard the news. It is such a great honour. It made me realise the enormity of what has been achieved in the last 15 years.
