The Cutts Family Coupe, Version 2.0

Rob Fortier
Back To The '60s...Sort Of

Twenty-five years after it was first made available for consumer enjoyment, Jim Cutts was successful in acquiring a ’34 Ford coupe he’d been previously unsuccessful in convincing the owner of selling for a number of years prior—apparently a pregnant girlfriend took financial precedence, which ultimately brought an end to Jim’s persistent inquisitioning.

This wasn’t your run-of-the-mill three-window coupe Jim had finally gotten his hands on, mind you. His years of bugging probably had a lot to do with the fact that the ’34 had a built Flathead, a dropped axle—in other words, it was a hot rod, which Jim drove accordingly, as it wasn’t long before he blew that flat motor up. Thinking he’d learned his lesson (as far as mechanical limitations go possibly), he replaced the retired Ford V-8 with a Dodge Hemi, which kept the coupe on the road on into the ’70s until it, too, let loose. At this point, after 15 years of hot-rodding around NorCal, the decision was made to put it in Park for good and concentrate on other, more important things—like family.
