For starters, do not confuse this with any of the other 220d-spec cars from the Mercedes stable. This is an all-new engine, a different family (codenamed OM654) and the E-Class is the first car to get it. Mercedes spent around £2 billion developing this versatile engine platform that will potentially spawn diesel engines for every car from A-Class to S-Class. In layman terms, engine size is modified either by adding or reducing cylinders. Of course, the process is much more complex than that.
