Politismos launched on October 28, 2015 as Greece commemorated the 75th Anniversary of OXI Day (the country's entry into WWII).  This issue contains travel tips when visiting Ioannina, a review of the Vrellis Wax Museum, artist interviews, a look at "new" Greek gastronomy and more!

This month we look back in time to the glory of the Byzantine Empire, from simple wonders like the cuisine of the time to the last Emperor and his valiant attempt to hold the great city of Constantinople.  The era is a great and rich one in Greek history and we also share some recommendations of excellent books which further explore various aspects of the time. We also journey to Morea, where the yoke of the Ottoman occupation was finally broke some 368 years later. "Learning from Athens" - the theme of documenta 14, the major contemporary arts festival, and it has officially opened in Greece this April! We also visit the Ancient Forum, travel to Lake Tsvilou and take a look at renowned photographer Robert McCabe's exhibition "Greece, Pathways to an Enchanted Life" opening at the Greek Embassy in Brussels this month. We are excited and privileged to share with you this month an interview with the Greece’s new Minister of Culture, Lydia Koniordou.  Appointed in November of 2016, she has taken the reigns of a department that oversees the protection of Greek culture  - no small task for a country that has tens of thousands of years of documented history, culture and tradition.  We wish her good fortune, not only for her, but for all of Greece and its amazing treasures.

We also had the opportunity to speak with Vasilis Tsikaras, director of the film EXODOS 1826, the first film made in over 46 years about Greece’s fight for independence from its Ottoman occupiers.

We are pleased to share a special feature this month on the 150th Anniversary of the National Archaeological Museum in Greece. With their special exhibition Odysseus, the Museum continues on their journey of celebrating Hellenism! It's also the start of Apokries, now through February 26. Costumes, songs, and celebrations throughout Greece will abound and we share a special celebration from the island of Amorgos and a wonderful lenten recipe from Aglaia Kremezi, author of "Mediterranean Vegetarian Feasts" which she wrote from her home on the island of Kea.
