Downtown Stonington will soon see a new year-round restaurant. Read about it inside. Also inside, the CSD Board reviews its most recent financial audit, and the Mini Village returns to the village. 


The state and federal governments have announced programs and funding for storm damage waterfront repairs. We have the details. The Island school board and school administrators are working through the annual budget process, seeking to keep programs operating while holding down cost increases for taxpayers. On a lighter note, we have a story (and, yes, a photo!) of a spring peeper, one of many aptly named chorus frogs now in full song each evening.

The near total eclipse of the sun on April 8 was witnessed by Islanders watching from their lawns, the Settlement Quarry and locations across the area, with clear blue skies perfect for viewing. Federal monies are available for Stonington Water Company improvements and the Isle au Haut Boat Services dock. We have the stories and photos.

The Maine Department of Transportation shares potential options for solving the problem of storm-related overflow on the Deer Isle Causeway and seeks public feedback. We have the story and the schematic source information. At a meeting attended by parents and the county sheriff, the Island school board explains how a threat made by a student was dealt with. The Island Nursing Home board formally announces that it will be converting the facility to senior housing. And we have a story and graphics on an area in the Gulf of Maine being proposed for a wind farm.

Island high school students attending the Hancock County Technical Center in Ellsworth win major awards in their areas of study at a state competition. One student is going on to the national competition. We have a photo and the full story. The Maine Department of Transportation plans an online presentation to announce five proposals for how to fix the Deer Isle Causeway and will seek feedback from the public. Our story covers the details and how to respond. This week's coverage also reports on federal funding to come  for winter storm repairs. And, with a near total solar eclipse coming to our area on Monday, April 8, we offer a special spread, with need-to-know details and fun facts.

There are a variety of timely stories this week. The Stonington select board looks at composting, while Deer Isle starts the process of designing a new fire station. A GoFundMe campaign is underway to replace the often photographed wharf belonging to the late Stonington fisherman Andy Gove. Gove is known along the coast for his numerous lobster boat race trophies and locally for his on-the-water rescues.

Deer Isle and Stonington held their annual town meetings on Monday, March 11. Common to both towns are substantial increases in waste disposal costs, reserve funding to build new fire stations in the future, and increases in funding requests from Island nonprofits. In Stonington, Skip Greenlaw serves as town meeting moderator, as he has done since 1988. We report on initial efforts by government agencies to provide disaster relief money to mitigate winter storm damage. And Island high school students win a state drama award.

It’s been a busy week for Island town officials. Annual town meetings in Deer Isle and Stonington are Monday, March 11. We offer a full preview of both. In the only contested race for public office in Stonington, the incumbent Selectmen outpolled the only challenger. And Stonington is once again the largest lobster port by value and poundage, while changes are occurring in the lobster population. 

People in the news this week. There are three candidates, two incumbents and one challenger, on the ballot for two open seats on the Stonington Board of Selectmen. We have interviewed them to help voters make their choices. There is a new executive director coming to the Opera House and a new managing editor coming to Penobscot Bay Press. You can see their pictures and read about their backgrounds.

If you want to leave from or go to Mountainville and Sunshine starting March 1 you will have to take a roundabout route on Reach and Fish Creek roads due to replacement construction at the Meadow Brook culvert. Our map shows the route and our coverage tells the story. The Opiate Free Island Partnership has made 26 Narcan emergency overdose or “rescue” kits available at various locations around the Island. Preparatory to going into the nuts and bolts of their annual budgeting process, the CSD School Board has affirmed re-appointments to positions and the need for major support for maintenance and plant improvements. A Go-Fund-Me effort has raised enough funds so that Dockside Books and Gifts, which was totally destroyed in the January 10 storm, can be rebuilt. Jack Scott wraps up the varsity girls basketball team’s season with a note that they will be in the tournament again this year. Want to know what the planned road improvements are? The subject of short-term rentals and their effect on the availability of affordable workforce and year-round housing comes up at a recent Stonington select board meeting. Realtor Morgan Eaton attends and presents a detailed proposal to change some of the terms and details in the current ordinance to better provide for those needs. The board does not take any action. In Deer Isle, the select board hears from nonprofits requesting placement on a special secret ballot as part of next month’s town meeting process. And we have a short story on the recent bird count organized by Isle au Haut School.


February starts with a busy news week. Many of the stories are about fisheries and waterfronts.
Topics include: a pending change in the lobster gage; right whale location research; storm damage and wharves; and a visit by a FEMA team. There is extensive coverage about the Island Women Speak event at the Opera House.

In the aftermath of the January 10 and 13 storms, our coverages shifts to the continuing cleanup, assessment of damage, and identification of aid for recovery. An Another View column from Governor Janet Mills outlines state efforts to help. The storms prompt the Maine Department of Transportation to increase its focus on what is needed to fix the Deer Isle Causeway between Little and big Deer Isle. The major news this week centers on the January 10 and January 13 storms that brought havoc to the island. We have multiple stories and photos that tell the story of how the storm surge caused massive damage to Stonington Harbor and low-lying areas all over the island. We end our publishing year with an issue that we all enjoy sharing with you. It is our annual Christmas issue, featuring drawings and writing by area school children on the theme “What Christmas and the holidays mean to me.” The drawings convey delightful perspectives and capture what this season is all about. There is a feature story on the history of Christmas carols, our annual Christmas editorial and numerous holiday greeting ads from area businesses and organizations. Just a reminder that content from this two-in-one issue will be up for two weeks, as we do not publish Christmas week. Our next issue comes out January 4. On December 18, for the third Monday in a row, our area was hit by another storm cycle. This week's was the worst yet, leaving hundreds of thousands of people across the state, including many thousands in our local coverage area, without power for extended periods as fallen trees took down power lines. Many roads were blocked and 2-plus inches of rain caused minor flooding. Southeast winds, with gusts near 70 mph, brought high waves and flying spray. We have overview coverage.

The major Island event we cover this week is Talk of the Town held at the Opera House. The lead sentence in the story by Will Robinson sums it up. “Hardly any of the 246 seats in the Stonington Opera House were empty as people from all over the Island and Peninsula discussed climate change with a panel of six local experts at the first ‘talk of the town’ community conversation on December 6.“ Stonington select board member Travis Fifield added his overview, emphasizing the importance of infrastructure investment. He encouraged the gathered locals to continue to support the towns as they adapt. “A small investment now can save millions down the road,” he said. Both town governments are dealing with the complications and costs of waste disposal. Our sports columnist Jack Scott reports on the start of the Island high school basketball season. The month begins with the first snowstorm of the year. Schools were closed December 4, and wet snow clung to trees, creating winter wonderland vistas captured by our photographers. At a public meeting, the Island Nursing Home board welcomes ideas from the public for repurposing the facility, including considering the creation of housing for people 55 and older. We offer an in-depth story with photos. Looking ahead, the draft comprehensive plan for the town of Deer Isle is shared at a select board meeting. We have the story, plus the text of the vision statement that accompanies the plan. Tracie Morey of Stonington announces her resignation from the CSD 13 school board. The town will choose a replacement to finish out her term. And, don't forget to view our Coming Events for upcoming holiday festivities you might like to attend! 

For our last issue of November, we continue our coverage of holiday activities. The annual Christmas fair at the Island Community Center draws a crowd of nearly 300 people looking to purchase homemade craft items and more. Thanksgiving meals are delivered to those in need. A special perspective piece reports on the importance of the Seaside Pharmacy to the Island community while telling of the health struggles of its pharmacist. Stonington’s select board has been active. At a regular board meeting, members chastise the attending CSD 13 superintendent and school board members for poor communication about the need for and costs of keeping up the school buildings and systems. And, at a special town meeting called to approve transfer funds to address line items that ran over budget, the board hears complaints and frustrations from voters.

Talk of the Towns, a new series of public conversations and screenings created through local partnerships, launches December 6 with a presentation on climate resilience. The Island Nursing Home board sets a date for a public meeting to solicit ideas for the facility’s future. And Stonington residents will be asked to help balance the town’s budget at a special town meeting on November 27.

Island Workforce Housing announces its new executive director, a Stonington resident and advocate for coastal and island communities. A public meeting to discuss the future of the Island Nursing Home remains unscheduled. And the efforts of more than 100 Deer Isle-Stonington students bring The Wizard of Oz to the island!

Deer Isle voters will be asked to help balance the budget at a special town meeting after road paving finishes in the red. The newest restaurant on Stonington’s Main Street holds its grand opening. And Deer Isle’s select board approves a liquor license for a new restaurant and music venue coming to the Old Legion Hall.

Together with the Opiate-Free Island Partnership, Deer Isle-Stonington High School hosts a schoolwide substance abuse discussion. Members of the Deer Isle and Stonington select boards hold a joint meeting for the first time in years to address shared concerns. And the Fishermen’s Wives Association is honored with a national community service award!

A Deer Isle resident suggests using the former Island Nursing Home as a communal living space. Harbor Café closes, with plans to reopen as the Island Central Kitchen. And the Town of Stonington commits to the Oceanville bridge replacement in a contract with Maine Department of Transportation.  

Islanders discuss the impacts of a possible Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge failure. The University of Maine at Orono leads the development of a new state-of-the-art tool for tracking PFAS. And Island neighbors bring the Halloween spirit!

The Island Nursing Home announces that it will not reopen due to a lack of funding and staff. Community School District 13 school board receives a presentation on proposed PFAS filters from Olver Associates. And Holt Mill Pond Bridge is set to reopen on Saturday, October 14.

The community turns out for Applefest, hosted by the Island Community Center. The Island Education Foundation funds education-related projects and programs, granting $23,000 so far this year. And Island middle schoolers “upcycle” plastic into art with the guidance of artist Kim Bernard in a collaboration with Haystack Mountain School of Crafts.
