The Men’s Folio team rolled with the theme of New Wave for the April ’21 issue. We wanted to refocus and emphasise subjects that have always mattered through a renewed lens of the world today.

Art director, Izwan Abdullah alongside fashion stylist and writer, Manfred Lu employed the use of bricolage in this issue’s fashion spread (page 68) where the photography sensibilities of 1990s, combined with today’s technology of depth focus, shine a spotlight on the Spring/Summer ’21 utilitarian fashion and accessories.

Cover star, Ludi Lin stars as Liu Kang in the reboot of Mortal Kombat that harnessed new technology to give audience a more realistic experience. Moreover, Men’s Folio deep dived into the discussion on the recent Asian hate crimes that have come to light in the United States with Lin on page 54 — a reality that should have never occurred in the present world.

Hatred in any form should never be perpetuated nor tolerated. Varying qualities are almost always needed to spark a bricolage and form a movement of diversity. Hence, Men’s Folio believes in consistently tapping into as many voices and conversations as possible to create an issue that is more generative than the last. This issue, Men’s Folio initiated conversations with sportsmen who are flying the Singapore flag high on the international sporting arena — discovering their discipline in honing their talents and good looks(page 50).

At Men’s Folio, we also believe in the adage “old is gold” (Men’s Folio is the oldest men’s title in Singapore now). Sustainability is a conversation that requires a recap every so often and for this issue, Men’s Folio delved on the economics of sustainability with beatboxer, Dharni and business owner, Ahmad Habshee (page 48). Deputy editor, Bryan Goh and art assistant, Erwin Canuela also expounded on Singaporeans’ love affair with hawker food with the duo of Beng Who Cooks who are passionate about stretching our culinary heritage beyond time.
