Switzerland is home to so many iconic climbs that other nations want to borrow them: the Tour de France has dipped into Swiss territory on plenty of occasions and this year the Giro d’Italia will do the same. The 2023 race will take in the stunning Croix de Coeur on stage 13, so we got in ahead of the pros to see what all the fuss is about ourselves. The 11km ascent reaches a height of 2,174m, but compared to this issue’s Classic Climb the Croix de Coeur is a mere appetiser. Over its 41km length, the mighty Pico de Veleta climbs to 3300m, and even in summer there’s no guarantee you’ll reach its peak. Did we make it? You’ll have to pick up an issue to find out.

Issue 139 was much more than just big hills though. We spoke to Orla Chennaoui about how she established herself as the face of pro cycling as lead presenter on Eurosport, got the inside scoop on what ultra-racing in Rwanda is like and definitely didn’t get tipsy on a whiskey-themed ride around Islay. Even our tech topics were top-drawer: we took a first look at the newest Cannondale Supersix Evo, went for a deep dive into the history of Scott’s iconic Addict and tested the rowdy YT Szepter, beautiful Basso Diamante and slippery Scott Foil. We may be biased, but we think issue 139 might just be our best issue yet.

As autumn fast approaches, issue 131 sees Cyclist’s crack team of testers take an in-depth look at the best autumn kit to keep you riding. But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves, because it’s still summer (just) and what a summer it has been. We look back across the best pro-racing through the viewfinders of the world’s best photographers, plus we follow FDJ-Suez-Futuroscope as they take on the most historic event cycling has seen in years – the inaugural Tour de France Femmes.

Our profile this month is on Giuseppe Saronni, one Italy’s most decorated riders, while our Big Ride and Classic Climb also take a turn around the Italian block, with a hidden gravel route around the Dolomites’ craggiest peaks and leg-shredding investigation of the Classics’ hardest climb, the Muro di Sormano.

This year the Tour de France will kick off from Denmark, so issue 128 is also a perfect excuse for us to take a Big Ride in one of Denmark’s most beautiful spots, the island of Møn; and being as though it’s summer, it’s also a perfect time to bring you our summer kit picks, as chosen by <Cyclist>’s team of expert tester. Bikes come from Pinarello, which unveils it’s latest gravel bike, Specialized, whose Allez Sprint proves there’s life in aluminium yet, and Lapierre, whose latest pro bike is just a bit good. 4,700m climbing in 157km? Yes, that’ll be this month’s Big Ride, a huge undertaking in the mountains of the western Pyrenees, where one rider’s unchartered territory is another’s brutally steep tranquillity. It’s a similar story in our Classic Climb, a leg-shredding route up the Col de Petit-Saint-Bernard, and our exhausting-just-reading-about-it look into the outfit behind the Belgium’s biggest races, Flanders Classics. 

We take a deep-dive look at whether Cavendish will end up going to the Tour this year, faced with stiff opposition from teammate Fabio Jakobsen, while Ineos Grenadiers’ sports director, ex-pro and breakaway specialist Steve Cummings, gives us a behind the scenes insight into running one of the world’s biggest cycling teams.
