Musicworks 146 is all about breaking grooves and reexamining history. Multi-instrumentalist Julie Richardâs passion project is exploring the legacy of little known Black women composers by breathing life into their forgotten works through collective creation; the article also outlines the story of African American composer Shirley Grahamâs 1932 opera Tom-Tom, Richardâs most recent focus. Abstract turntablist Maria Chavez discusses the roots of her practice, the pervasiveness of capitalism in music culture, and the magical qualities of shattered vinyl. Historian Francesca DâAmico-Cuthbert recounts the story of Michele Geister, the creator of TV series RapCity, who used the power of media to circumvent industry-generated obstacles and nurture the rise of the Canadian Hip Hop nation. Trevor Grahl explains the influence of his love of nostalgia on his music and the reality of the composerâs life. We check in with guitarist and music-community instigator Mustafa Rafiq and architect and electroacoustic ambient musician Evan Dysart. Read an extended review Resonance Gathering, a recording and book that document a large-scale performance project on the music of composer Pauline Oliveros (1932-2016) that occurred in Canada before the pandemic.
