Foreign Minister Abdul Momen has recently announced that there is a prospect for huge deposits of gas hydrate within Bangladesh’s maritime boundary. If the resource existing there is considered as gas deposits, it may vary from 17-103 Tcf. It was also informed that the information emanated from the seismic surveys carried out during the arbitration on maritime boundary disputes with India and Myanmar, and that the information available with Petrobangla about offshore petroleum resources upon desk studies has led to such a statement. The announcement has created confusion over what actually is there. This pandemonium has deepened further when it has been surfaced that even the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources is unaware about the prospects. The sector related experts, analysts and observers have also raised their eyebrows on hearing the news. Some quarters have even criticized that this might be a deliberate ploy for creating artificial confidence about the country’s primary fuel prospects at a time when the world is suffering from energy supply deficits. However, debates about gas resources are nothing new in Bangladesh. There was a perception two decades back that the country was floating on gas resources.

The government should immediately clear the confusion through taking necessary measures so that it does not ultimately create a hurdle in the way of the country’s development.

Bangladesh is an energy deficit country like other countries in the region and most of the people do not have adequate access to the energy and power. The country is completely dependent on fossil energy source; at the same time, it is one of the most inefficient energy using countries in the world. 
It lacks efficiency in planning, management, generation, distribution, load management and even at the end user level consumption. 
In spite of the above drawbacks, issues relating to utilization of renewable energy, exploring alternative use of energy, planned use of environment friendly energy are significantly undermined in Bangladesh. 
The biggest challenge of Bangladesh is to find a path for balanced growth of its energy sector. Despite its resource constraints, EP dynamically strives to provide theenergy sector with a flow of information and create public awareness; so that policymakers get guidelines and platforms for its sustainable development.
