Bangladesh's power sector has achieved laudable successes in generation capacity and electricity coverage over the past 15 years. However, half of the generation capacity remains idle causing substantial financial burden as the government has to pay capacity charges to the power producers without getting electricity. Dollar crisis-induced fuel shortage is one of the main problems of running the power plants. Meanwhile, failure to achieve commensurate expansion and development of transmission and distribution networks leaves the power sector in criticism, which is intensified further due to delays in the development of evacuation facilities from few new power plants now ready to deliver. Moreover, Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) is getting ready for commercial operation, but the facilities to evacuate its electricity are still way behind, creating concerns among the experts that the plant would also have to keep idle – now for a lack of transmission line. September 2024 has been set as the deadline for commencing trial operation of the first unit of the RNPP. But there are apprehensions about the completion of transmission facilities by then. The ongoing distribution network projects are progressing well but the transmission segment fell behind other segments of the power supply chain. These are delaying power evacuation from some generation facilities even after making these ready for commercial operation. These are causing financial losses to the power sector.

Against this backdrop, the country’s power transmission system deserves special attention from the government and authorities concerned so that the ongoing projects are implemented timely.

Energy & Power (EP) is the first and only full-fledged fortnightly magazine that deals with the much cried over energy and power sector in Bangladesh. Since its inception in June 16, 2003, EP is working very hard to
a) Develop public consciousness on sustainable and even development of energy sector;
b) Assist the policy makers in assuming pragmatic policies for a balanced development of the energy sector;
c) Continuous supply of information among public; and
d) Develop a group of reporters in this field

Bangladesh is an energy deficit country like other countries in the region and most of the people do not have adequate access to the energy and power. The country is completely dependent on fossil energy source; at the same time, it is one of the most inefficient energy using countries in the world.
It lacks efficiency in planning, management, generation, distribution, load management and even at the end user level consumption.
In spite of the above drawbacks, issues relating to utilization of renewable energy, exploring alternative use of energy, planned use of environment friendly energy are significantly undermined in Bangladesh.
The biggest challenge of Bangladesh is to find a path for balanced growth of its energy sector. Despite its resource constraints, EP dynamically strives to provide theenergy sector with a flow of information and create public awareness; so that policymakers get guidelines and platforms for its sustainable development.
