Skyworth K is a Chinese EV worth trying

Car enthusiasts who deride electric vehicles (EVs) as soul-less white goods will be happy or angry to know that the K is an electric sport utility vehicle (SUV) made by Skyworth, the Chinese company better known for house-hold appliances such as refrigerators, washing machines and television sets.

The K is the first Skyworth EV to be available in Singapore and it is priced to sell.

It measures 4,720mm from bumper to bumper, 19mm more than the likes of the Volkswagen Tiguan. The wheelbase, at 2,900mm, is very generous for its class, considering that a seven-seater like the Skoda Kodiaq measures 2,791mm.

The boot may not be deep enough to carry a full-sized fridge without folding the rear seats, but it is more than sufficient to cope with the needs of most families.

The exterior design is modern, almost handsome, if a bit conservative. Other than missing a front grille, the car can easily be mistaken for an internal combustion engine car. The finishing seems rather good too. The paint-work on the test car looks rich and glossy, and the doors operate with assuring heft.
