Jail, fine for drink driver whose vehicle hit stationary police car

On a night out with his friends, a man had around five glasses of beer before driving more than 20km to his next watering hole.

At the second location, he drank another five glasses of beer before deciding to drive himself home.

Meng Xianglei, 39, who was intoxicated at that point, drove straight into a stationary police car along Somerset Road.

On Aug 5, he was sentenced to three weeks' jail, fined $7,000 and disqualified from all classes of driving licences for three years, after he pleaded guilty to one count of driving while under the influence of alcohol and another for driving without due care.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Timothy Ong said Meng had met his friends at around 10pm on April 5, 2024, at a restaurant in Jurong Trade Hub.
