Winning over 90 per cent of the vote, General Oligui's rise from coup leader to elected President represents a full circle of power consolidation – but one that raises significant questions about the authenticity of democratic renewal and the long-term prospects for reform in the central African state.

General Oligui came to prominence in 2023 after toppling the Bongo dynasty, a family that held Gabon in a political chokehold for more than half a century.
