Christmas Day attack breached court order

A THUG who ignored bail conditions to attack his partner on Christmas Day has been spared jail.

Carl Clews, aged 48, had been drinking when he verbally abused the woman, grabbed her and threw her to the floor.

Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard he hurled a candle at her and she was left with a cut to her head which needed hospital treatment.

He repeatedly returned to her property the next day and broke a window.

But police found him in the garden and he was arrested.

Now Clews has been handed an 18-month community order and a five-year restraining order.

Prosecutor Salek Ahmed said the defendant was in a relationship with his victim for three years.
