Odisha accelerates towards green mobility with EV Policy 2.0: Targets 50pc BEV registrations by 2036

IN a decisive move to strengthen its clean mobility agenda, the Government of Odisha is set to unveil Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2.0, with a bold target of achieving 50% Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) registrations in all new vehicle sales by 2036. The initiative is a significant stride under the broader Odisha Vision 2036, aligning with national efforts to reduce carbon emissions and foster sustainable transport.

A high-level brainstorming session was jointly convened on Wednesday by the Commerce & Transport Department and the Energy Department to deliberate on the upcoming policy framework. The meeting was co-chaired by Usha Padhee, Principal Secretary, Commerce & Transport, and Vishal Kumar Dev, Principal Secretary, Energy, and included key departmental officials who reviewed the progress and outlined strategic priorities.

The state has witnessed a consistent rise in EV adoption — from a modest 1.16 per cent in 2021 to 8.71 per cent as of June 20, 2025. This upward trend reinforces the viability of Odisha’s new target and the public's growing confidence in electric mobility solutions.
