J’khand tribal defies cancer, plays in National Para Archery Championship

DESPITE losing a leg to cancer, tribal youth Amar Hassa Purty of Jharkhand has scripted a comeback, representing the state at the 7th National Para Archery Championship held in Patiala from January 29 to February 3.
Amar was once the parade commander of RC Balak Middle School. While studying in Class VIII, he was diagnosed with cancer, leading to the amputation of his leg.
According to his sister Anita Hassa Purty, the family slipped into extreme poverty. Their father remained bedridden due to prolonged illness, while their elder brother Anil Hassa Purty was earlier associated with the outlawed Maoist outfit PLFI. With no steady income, Amar’s dream of education seemed impossible.
