Rainy Season Eye Care: Prevent Infections and Irritations

However, along with the pleasant weather come increased humidity, bacteria, and viral infections—especially ones that target the eyes. Moisture-laden air, waterlogged roads, and exposure to infected rainwater can contribute to various eye problems during this season. Hence, taking special care of your eyes during the monsoon is crucial to avoid discomfort, infections, and potential damage to vision.

In this article, we'll explore common eye issues during the rainy season and offer practical tips to protect your eyes and maintain optimum eye health.

Why Eye Infections Are Common During The Rainy Season

The rainy season creates an ideal environment for bacteria, viruses, and fungi to thrive. The high moisture content in the air and water allows microorganisms to multiply rapidly. Waterborne and air-borne infections become more prevalent, and due to close contact in public places or touching eyes with contaminated hands, the risk of eye infections increases.

Additionally, people tend to rub their eyes more during this season due to irritation caused by allergens, pollution, and humidity, further aggravating the risk of transmitting germs.

Common Eye Problems In The Monsoon

Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)

One of the most common infections during the rainy season, conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva (the outer membrane of the eye). It is highly contagious and can be caused by viruses or bacteria. Symptoms include redness, itching, watering, and sometimes a sticky discharge.

Stye

A stye is a painful red bump near the edge of the eyelid caused by bacterial infection of an oil gland. The moist environment of the rainy season can increase the likelihood of developing styes.
