MAILE: AFTER SPAZA SHOPS, MEC SAYS THEY'LL GO AFTER LARGER OUTLETS

Government will soon target bigger food outlets for compliance and not just spaza shops, Gauteng finance and economic development MEC Lebogang Maile said yesterday.

Maile was in Moroka, Soweto, leading a food safety blitz targeting spaza shops and food outlets. The aim of the blitz is to ensure that food outlets adhere to health standards, comply with regulations and do not sell contaminated food.

Inspections of spaza shops intensified in October when more than 10 children died after consuming snacks.

More than 20 children have died to food contamination linked to these shops, sparking a call for registration and regular raids.
