Torn Lands, Torn Lives: Partition's Pain Revisited

The recent terror attack in Pahalgam has once again brought the enduring scars of the 1947 Partition of India into sharp focus. This tragic event, which led to the deaths of over a million people and the displacement of approximately 15 million, continues to influence the socio-political landscape of the Indian subcontinent.

The Partition Museum in Amritsar stands as a testament to this history, preserving the memories and stories of those affected. Authors like Khushwant Singh and Saadat Hasan Manto have poignantly captured the human cost of Partition in their writings, providing invaluable insights into this tumultuous period.

The Partition Museum: Preserving Memories

Located in the historic Town Hall of Amritsar, the Partition Museum stands as a poignant testament to one of the most traumatic events in the Indian subcontinent's history—the Partition of 1947. Established by The Arts and Cultural Heritage Trust (TA-ACHT) and inaugurated on August 25, 2017, the museum is the world's first dedicated to preserving the stories and artefacts of Partition. Its mission is to serve as a repository of memories, ensuring that the experiences of those affected are not forgotten.

The museum's exhibits are meticulously curated to provide an immersive experience. Visitors can explore a range of galleries that chronologically trace the events leading up to Partition, the horrors that ensued, and the resilience of those who lived through it. Personal letters, photographs, and everyday objects donated by survivors and their families offer intimate glimpses into lives disrupted by the division. These artefacts, such as a traditional rope cot carried across the border by a refugee or an antique pocket watch belonging to a victim of mob violence, humanise the vast statistics associated with Partition.
