Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), owned by Tata Motors, announced on Wednesday that it has signed a letter of intent with its Chinese joint venture partner, Chery Automobile Company Ltd, to license the Freelander brand for the development of electric vehicles (EVs) in China.

This strategic move marks a significant pivot for their joint venture, CJLR, which is a 50/50 partnership between JLR and Chery.
Under the new licensing agreement, CJLR will focus on producing a sophisticated range of EVs utilizing Chery's advanced EV architecture. These vehicles will be marketed exclusively under the Freelander name, a brand that previously adorned Land Rover models produced between 1997 and 2015 before being replaced by the Discovery Sport in 2016.
