Sir Bobby's legacy helps Ukraine kids
Sunday People
|August 24, 2025
THE late, great 1966 World Cup hero Sir Bobby Charlton is still scoring magnificent goals for youngsters in war-torn Ukraine.
The England and Manchester United legend became renowned as a champion for children caught up in conflict in his later years.
And now a Foundation he set up in 2011 to aid youngsters in Cambodia left disabled by landmines has helped launch United Together a project offering children the chance to play football safely amid the destruction left behind by Russia's relentless bombing.
For a precious hour each week, they can forget about the fighting and immerse themselves in fun games, building up ball skills and matches.
It's all down to a joint initiative between the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation and Ukrainian team FC Shakhtar Donetsk.
Coach Kremsa Volodymyr Yuriio-vych told us: "Many of the kids came along very withdrawn or distressed because of the events in the country. But now they smile, make friends and set goals for themselves. I can see them changing - they become more confident, more active, learning to work together and support each other.
Support
"I feel I'm doing something truly important - not only teaching football but also helping children through a difficult period, giving them a sense of stability and support."
