GERT SCHALKWYK (PART 1)

- By Zola Doda

Gert, welcome back to the pages of Soccer Laduma. Before we get into the interview, can you please tell us a story about when you were catfished by a former Kaizer Chiefs teammate who pretended to be a girl on the Mxit App, ha, ha, ha. What really happened?

Ha, ha, ha, I honestly can't remember which former Chiefs teammate pulled that prank on me - but yeses. The thing about Mxit at that time is that it was not like WhatsApp these days, where you can request a picture in order to know who you were talking to. But it was actually funny when it happened and the joke was on me, ha, ha, ha.

Ha, ha, ha! Can you tell us about other players in that Chiefs team? Cyril Nzama was the funniest. That guy would tease everyone without even thinking about it. But the one person who was always quiet was the late John “Shoes” Moshoeu. “Shoes” didn’t smile a lot he went about his business and took his job very seriously. He was always serious, but Cyril was the king of comedy. No one else came close to him.

Before you joined Chiefs, you actually started your career at Free State Stars. How was your time in QwaQwa?

Adams faces race against time

Jayden Adams' international future hangs in the balance, and the countdown has officially begun. With just one month remaining before Hugo Broos finalises his squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, the 24-year-old midfielder finds himself in a position few would have predicted two years ago. Once a rising star of Stellenbosch FC and a standout performer at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, Adams now faces the harsh reality of reduced game time at Mamelodi Sundowns and uncertainty around his Bafana Bafana role. The player who earned his way into Broos' plans through hard work and consistency has slipped into unfamiliar territory at club level, and his national team prospects have dimmed as a result. The Siya crew has been tracking his situation closely, uncovering worrying signs behind the scenes as Adams fights to keep his AFCON dream alive.
