THE massive 1,250-home extension of Nottinghamshire town has been given planning permission, despite nearly 200 objections from neighbours.
A stretch of farmland the size of 142 football pitches to the south of Retford is set to be turned into a colossal new housing estate after Bassetlaw District Council approved the huge project on Wednesday, April 1.
Councillors at the meeting approved outline planning permission for up to 1,250 houses, a new local centre, indoor and outdoor sports pitches, a school, community hub, extra care facility, and community park and woodland off Ollerton Road.
Planning documents submitted by applicant Howard (Retford) Limited argued the scheme would create an “attractive new neighbourhood that complements its landscape and townscape context”, but locals had objected in droves to the application.

The council had recorded 187 objections in total, with many of these raising concerns over the scale of the development and its location.
