AMERICA'S hotshot whizz kid has become the mayor of New York City.

Zohran Mamdani is the 34-year-old Democrat set to lead the city as its 111th mayor.

He will be the city's first Muslim mayor. He will be the youngest mayor in more than a century when he takes office.

He was born abroad and has immigrant parents. And he says he is unapologetically a socialist democrat.

After starting at just one per cent in the polls, he built a grassroots campaign paid for by small donations while most US politicians have billionaire backers.

He is likened to Barack Obama, who, when he first entered politics, was ‘othered’ by Democrats who thought he didn't fit their ideals.
