Teacher to pay ₹1L to kin of pupil who died after 300 sit-ups

Criminal charges quashed
BHUBANESWAR: The Orissa high court has directed a school teacher to pay ₹1 lakh to the family of a student who died in November 2019 while doing 300 sit-ups.
The court, however, dismissed the charge of criminal intimidation against the teacher and clarified that 'corporal punishment' upon a student for the purpose of disciplining cannot amount to an offence under section 82 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act, 2015.
The single judge bench of justice Sibo Sankar Mishra said on March 4 that the compensation was not an acknowledgment of guilt but a measure of relief to the bereaved family.
