Murder case convict jumps parole, turns actor in Bollywood films; nabbed again after 12 years

A murder convict who jumped parole in 2014 and spent nearly 12 years absconding while working as a supporting actor in Bollywood films and television shows was arrested by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch, police said on Thursday.

The accused, Hemant Nagindas Modi, 53, a native of Naroda in Ahmedabad, was serving a life sentence in a 2005 murder case registered at Naroda police station. He was granted 30-day parole by the Gujarat High Court on July 25, 2014, but failed to surrender after the parole period ended and was later declared a parole jumper, officials said.
Crime Branch officials said they received a tip-off that Modi was arriving in Ahmedabad.
“Based on the input, teams traced his old contacts and placed them under technical surveillance before tracking and intercepting him near Gheekanta Metro Station around 1 pm on May 20,” a senior official confirmed.
