Slovak PM 'out of danger' as gunman is linked to pro-Russia paramilitaries

THE Slovak prime minister was today said to be out of danger as investigators sought to establish the motive of the 71-year-old suspect arrested over the assassination attempt.
Robert Fico, a populist who has called for an end to military aid to Ukraine and the removal of sanctions on Russia, was shot several times yesterday outside a meeting in the small town of Handlova, 80 miles north-east of Slovakia's capital Bratislava.
The attack left Mr Fico seriously injured with initial reports saying that he was "fighting for his life" and the situation looked "bad".
But today, after Mr Fico, 59, underwent five hours of surgery, Slovakia's deputy prime minister Tomas Taraba told the BBC that the surgery had gone "well" and that "I guess he will survive.
