US tariff fears prompt urgent MP debate

The House of Representatives yesterday held an urgent debate on the impact of the United States' 36% tariff on Thai exports, as lawmakers voiced concern over the long-term implications for the national economy.

Government and opposition MPs proposed similar motions in parliament to address concerns about the US tariff hike. Suggestions made during the debate will be forwarded to the government for consideration.

Wisut Chainarun, chief government whip from the ruling Pheu Thai Party, said the whips agreed to postpone deliberations on several other bills — including one proposing the legalisation of casinos within entertainment complexes so that the House could prioritise the debate on the US tariff hike.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra's government has sought talks with the US to negotiate relief and explore ways to narrow Thailand's nearly US$46 billion (1.6 trillion baht) trade surplus with Washington.
