The UN Security Council (UNSC) voted on Thursday to remove President Ahmad al-Sharaa of Syria from a terrorism sanctions list, just days before his planned visit to Washington.

Mr Sharaa was once an Islamist rebel linked to al-Qaeda, and only a year ago, the United States had a US$10 million (323.5 million baht) bounty on his head. He led the rebel offensive that last December ended more than five decades of dictatorship in Syria. His administration has since made rapid strides in forging diplomatic ties with foreign leaders.

The resolution to amend the sanctions list, allowing for the removal, was drafted and advanced by the United States.
