Penalties for trio over Thaksin stay

- APINYA WIPATAYOTIN

The Medical Council of Thailand (MCT) is carrying out disciplinary action against three doctors in connection with the treatment of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra during his controversial stay at the Police General Hospital (PGH).

Prof Dr Prasit Watanapa, the council's vice president, said the MCT considered the ethical conduct of doctors during its meeting yesterday and decided to discipline three doctors.

One doctor was given a formal warning, while the other two had their medical licences suspended for providing inaccurate medical information and documents, Dr Prasit said.

Dr Prasit did not disclose the names of the doctors. It is also unclear how the MCT decision will impact Thaksin's case.

The next step will be to forward the resolution to Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin, who serves as the president of the MCT's special committee, for further consideration and final approval, Dr Prasit said.

He said that the doctor who is being reprimanded for his role in Thaksin's referral to the PGH did not commit any serious wrongdoing, while the other two were only disciplined for providing inaccurate information.
