NBTC mulls emergency warnings on digital TV channel

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) plans to integrate an early emergency warning system with a digital TV network.

The regulator is also studying the feasibility of designating a new digital TV channel called Channel 1 as a disaster warning channel.

According to an initial technical survey, a trial of the early warning system on digital TV broadcasting net-works known as multiplexers (MUX) can be conducted on the networks of the Royal Thai Army's TV station and Thai PBS's (TPBS) networks.

The role of MUX is to aggregate digital TV programmes for licence holders and beam such programmes to viewers.

The MUX networks of the army and TPBS cover roughly 80% of all terres-trial TV viewers.
