Harris re-emerges to take aim at Trump

Says economic policy ‘inviting a recession’

Former US vice president Kamala Harris called on Wednesday for Americans to stand together against US President Donald Trump and what she described as “the greatest man-made economic crisis in modern presidential history”.

Ms Harris made the remarks in her most significant speech since leaving office, marking a political re-emergence for the Democratic presidential candidate after losing last year’s election to Mr Trump. She is seen as a strong contender for California governor next year, should she choose to run, and could mount another presidential bid in future.

Speaking on Mr Trump's 100th day in office, Ms Harris said the tariffs that have defined his economic policy were “clearly inviting a recession’.

She accused Mr Trump of pursuing politics that benefit the wealthy and condemned what she called his “narrow, self-serving vision’; in which leaders “punish truth tellers, favour loyalists, cash in on their power, and leave everyone else to fend for themselves”.
