China rejects durians over lab results

Durian farmers and exporters from the Eastern fruit hubs of Chanthaburi and Trat provinces yesterday urged the government to solve durian export issues following China's rejection of Thai durians export laboratory results.

About 100 durian farmers and exporters gathered yesterday in Chanthaburi after China's General Administration of Customs (GACC) suspended the certification of two Thai labs that previously approved Thailand's durians for trace amounts of Basic Yellow 2 (BY2) dye.

Since Jan 10, exporters have been required to submit lab reports showing cadmium levels not exceeding 0.05 milligrams/kilogram and no detectable BY2, only from GACC-approved labs.
