There's no keeping up with the Bowens as they continue to set the racing world alight

WHEN it comes to Welsh sporting family dynasties you might think of rugby's Moriarty clan or football’s Charles brothers, or more recently, Rubin and Joel Colwill.

But even those famous families might struggle to keep up with the Bowen family’s current dominance of British horse racing.
Welsh racing has never felt more vibrant — and no family embodies its revival quite like the Bowens of Pembrokeshire.
As the Welsh Horse Racing Festival opens its gates at Chepstow Racecourse tomorrow, the sport's new three-day showcase for jump racing will be driven by a distinctly Welsh heartbeat.
And at its centre stand three men from one family.
The Bowen brothers - Sean, James, and Mickey - have turned this season into a celebration of Welsh excellence.
Sean, the reigning Jump Jockeys’ Champion, continues to lead this season's title race with 98 winners, while James sits second on 43.
Their brother Mickey, who took over the family’s training licence from their father Peter Bowen only last year, has already surged to the top of the Trainers’ Championship with 40 winners and nearly £390,000 in prize money.
For a small family yard in Little Newcastle near Haverfordwest, it’s a staggering achievement — proof that Welsh racing can now stand shoulder to shoulder with the sport's traditional English powerhouses.
Few people have done more for Welsh racing than the brother's father, Peter.
Having trained over 1,000 winners before retiring last year, he now takes enormous pride in watching his sons carry the family legacy forward.
“For my family, this year has been more than I could have dreamed about,” he says.
“I think Sean's about 50 wins clear of James in the championship, but it is so great that they currently one and two. Hopefully, it will stay that way for the rest of the season.
