Mayawati’s refusal may negatively change the dynamics for the bloc.
Amid speculation of taking Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) onboard the I.N.D.I. Alliance, BSP head and former chief minister of Uttar Pradesh Mayawati’s refusal to get into a pre-poll alliance is a setback for the bloc in the northern state. The Congress party was trying to bring together opposition parties to challenge the BJP in the state with 80 Lok Sabha seats.
However, Mayawati is ready for a post-poll alliance. Mayawati’s choice has not only extinguished possibilities of rallying all non-BJP entities for a robust opposition but has also paved the way for the emergence of a third political entity in UP, a crucial state in the Hindi heartland.
It underscores the Congress’ inability to bring together various like-minded parties in Uttar Pradesh to prevent the rise of a third political force.
