BOWESFIELD Nature Reserve has been the place to be for spotting top notch birds during the past couple of weeks.

Hot on the heels of the glossy ibis comes a marsh warbler, all the way from Africa.

Marsh warblers usually like to stay hidden deep in thick vegetation but birdwatchers were alerted to its presence by its song, even though it was hard to spot.

Patience paid off for Martyn Sidwell, who grabbed this superb picture of the marsh warbler, right, during a brief foray into the open.

Marsh warblers are similar to reed warblers, which you may see on a regular basis during a stroll beside a reedbed, particularly at RSPB Saltholme.

But marsh warblers are paler, being grey brown above, with a shorter bill and lacking the reddish brown rump of the reed warbler.
